Remembrance Day...

Posted: Tuesday, November 11th, 2008

Good morning everyone and Happy Remembrance Day…

Today I had the chance to visit the Diefenbunker – Canada’s Cold War Museum for the first time.  It’s a Canadian historic site and one that we should take advantage of.  It was built to protect the government in the event of a nuclear attack during the cold war and it’s amazing to see.  You step into a time warp walking through there, with the computers and communications equipment, interesting to see what they used then and how far we’ve come.  There is so much history there, if you ever wanted to learn more about that time in Canadian history, that’s the place to discover it.

My grandfather was in the Canadian Air Force and luckily the war had ended before he had completed his training and he never had to go.  However, my mom comes from a family of seven children and they moved from base to base all her life with no real roots anywhere.  My grandmother ran that house and raised those kids all on her own.  Being a mom of only two, I can’t imagine how difficult that must have been.  There are many sacrifices large or small, that our military makes on a daily basis that maybe go unrecognized.  Today we remember those who fought and paid dearly with their lives so we could enjoy the rights and freedoms we have today, but we also thank those who ever put on a uniform.

We thank our military for choosing such a brave and noble profession… we thank the families that are left behind when they go on another mission, the children who miss having a parent there for their birth, birthday or Christmas and we thank those who have lost loved ones in the name of freedom.

My 5 year old asked me to put a quarter in her school bag last night so she could buy a poppy at school today.  We got into a discussion about what war is, why we wear the poppy, and why we celebrate Remembrance Day.  This was followed by her asking me… “Mama, why is everyone fighting in the world?”…  All I could say was “Sweetheart, I don’t know”.

Wear your poppies with pride…

Angie
