Fruit and Vegetables Stickers

Posted: Tuesday, December 22nd, 2009

How often have you bit into an apple, only to dig your teeth into an annoying sticker, or cut a red pepper leaving a trail of paper on the cutting board? Essentially for many people those tiny stickers are a complete nuisance, but they actually have a worthwhile purpose especially if you are concerned about what kind of fruit and vegetables you are eating. Dr. Nathalie Beauchamp, the co-author of Wellness on the Go explained the purpose of those stickers on this mornings segment:

The PLU code for a conventionally grown fruit consists of four numbers….i.e. 1022

The PLU code for an organically grown fruit is five numbers beginning by the number 9…i.e. 91022

The PLU code for genetically modified fruit is five numbers beginning by the number 8 i.e. 81022

Just something to think about the next time your choosing your items at the grocery store!

But to be honest, sometimes they are still a nuisance when you forget to take them off!!!!
